Peter Obi’s Legacy: How a Teaching Hospital He Built 11 Years Ago Saved a Life
Just as the wrongdoings of men follow them, so do their good deeds. Eleven years after leaving office, the positive impact of Peter Obi’s tenure as Governor of Anambra State (2006–2014) continues to be felt. One of his notable achievements—the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital in Awka—has become a beacon of hope for many.
A US-based Nigerian, Chief Sabi Nweke, recently expressed profound gratitude to Obi for establishing the hospital, revealing that it played a crucial role in saving his life. While recounting his experience, Nweke said:
> "If that hospital wasn’t a teaching hospital, I may not have been alive today. I was in Awka for Christmas on December 10, 2024, and by the 15th, I was rushed to Amaku Hospital for treatment of diverticulitis. I was there until the 30th of December and returned to the US two weeks ago. Obi’s wise decision saved my life."
Feeling indebted, Nweke even reached out to Obi, commending his vision and urging him to continue his selfless work.
When asked about Nweke’s appreciation, Peter Obi reflected on the challenges he faced while establishing the hospital:
> "I built Nigeria’s fastest-completed teaching hospital from scratch—the first and only teaching hospital owned by Anambra State. This project was completed within two years, meeting the strict requirements of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. Without it, the State University Medical School would have been shut down."
At the time, Anambra State lacked an accredited teaching hospital, leaving medical students stranded. Obi’s administration worked tirelessly to secure approval from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, ensuring that the first set of medical doctors from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University Medical School could graduate.
Reflecting on his leadership philosophy, Obi emphasized:
> "My commitment to development is anchored on the most critical pillars of progress: Education, Healthcare, and lifting people out of poverty—key elements of the Human Development Index (HDI)."
Peter Obi’s legacy in healthcare and education remains a testament to how visionary leadership can transform lives—even years after leaving office.
