Senate Denies Allegations of Planned Arrest Against Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

The Nigerian Senate has dismissed claims by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that there are plans to arrest her upon her return from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) event in New York.

In a press statement on Monday, Senate Spokesman Adeyemi Adaramodu refuted the allegations, stating that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Senate have no reason to engage with Akpoti-Uduaghan on the matter.

“She’s searching for her lost content creation needle in a haystack,” Adaramodu remarked, adding that the Senate has moved past any issues with her.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had earlier alleged that upon her arrival in Abuja, she would face arrest, claiming that Senate President Akpabio had sent staff to remove her from the United Nations premises. She also defended her presence at the IPU event, insisting that her participation was legitimate despite her suspension.

Responding to her claims, Adaramodu suggested that Akpoti-Uduaghan was troubled by her own actions at the event.

“If she is being haunted by her unguarded statements against Nigeria at the IPU in New York, she should leave the Senate out of it. We are not willing to be part of such a misguided endeavor,” he stated.

During an interview with an online newspaper, Akpoti-Uduaghan reiterated her concerns about a planned arrest. She claimed that three staff members, led by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in New York, were sent to remove her from the UN premises immediately after her speech.

“I was aware of plans to arrest me the moment I stepped foot in Abuja. The Senate President Akpabio sent three staff members, led by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy, to evacuate me from the United Nations premises right after my speech. I was rescued by parliamentarians from other countries and security officials,” she said.

The senator explained that she had registered for the event online, asserting her right to participate.
