Senate Rejects Probe into Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Akpabio Without Formal Complaint

The Senate has stated that it cannot investigate the sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagha (PDP, Kogi Central) due to the lack of a formal petition. Speaking on ARISE TV on Monday, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, emphasized that without an official complaint, there is no basis for a probe. A Senate spokesperson confirmed that no formal petition had been submitted to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

In her interview, Senator Natasha claimed that on December 8, 2023, during a visit to Akpabio’s residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, he made inappropriate advances towards her—holding her hand, guiding her around his home, and making sexual advances while her husband trailed behind. She further alleged that, on another occasion, the former Akwa Ibom State governor suggested she should "make him happy" if she wanted her motions to receive favorable consideration on the Senate floor.

These allegations emerged shortly after the Senate unanimously voted to refer Senator Natasha for disciplinary review by the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, following a standoff over seating arrangements in the chamber. However, Akpabio has denied the allegations through his media consultant, Kenny Okulogbo, and his wife, Ekaette Akpabio, also defended him, calling the claims unfounded.

A Senate spokesman noted, “The Senate does not conduct its affairs based on what is trending on social media. There must be a formal petition or an issue raised before the Senate before any investigation can occur. Currently, the only matter before the Senate is Senator Natasha’s non-compliance with the standing orders.”

On the seating arrangement controversy, Senator Adaramodu reiterated that Senator Natasha must adhere to Senate rules. He also dismissed suggestions that the Senate President could intimidate his colleagues by denying them recognition, stressing that all senators are equal within the chamber.
