Tensions Escalate in Rivers State as Angry Youth Set Fire to Wike’s Residence

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — Political unrest in Rivers State intensified late Saturday as enraged youth set ablaze the private residence of former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. The attack, which occurred on the night of March 15, 2025, stemmed from allegations of political betrayal and destabilization efforts against Governor Siminalayi Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike, once a dominant force in Rivers politics, has been accused of colluding with lawmakers loyal to him in an attempt to impeach Fubara. The move has fueled widespread outrage, particularly from the group “Rivers Youth for Change,” who took to the streets in protest. Witnesses described a tense and chaotic scene as demonstrators stormed Wike’s residence in Port Harcourt, chanting slogans and denouncing his alleged actions.

“Wike is a traitor to his people and to the PDP. He was once our champion, but now he is trying to destroy everything we’ve fought for,” one protester stated anonymously.

While there were no reported casualties, the damage to Wike’s property was significant. Authorities have launched an investigation, urging calm amid rising political tensions.

Wike’s growing ties with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and his perceived efforts to weaken the PDP in Rivers State have deepened suspicions about his political agenda. Meanwhile, Fubara, once considered a Wike loyalist, now finds himself in direct opposition to his predecessor as the struggle for control of the state intensifies.

The incident has further divided the PDP, with some accusing Wike of betrayal for political survival, while others argue that Fubara is being unfairly targeted. Rivers State police have vowed to apprehend those responsible for the attack, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution over violence.

Governor Fubara has yet to issue an official statement, but sources close to his administration suggest he is closely monitoring the situation. As political uncertainty looms, calls for reconciliation and stability grow louder, with many fearing that escalating tensions could lead to further unrest in the state.
